A slow-rise squishy is made from viscoelastic polyurethane foam โ the same family of material used in memory-foam pillows.
Viscoelastic means the material behaves partly like a solid (it springs back) and partly like a thick liquid (it resists sudden change). That combination is the whole trick.
Why it takes its time
When you squeeze the foam, you push air out through its open cell structure. When you let go, the polymer wants to return to shape immediately, but air has to flow back in through those same narrow channels.
Rise time is therefore governed by two things: how stiff the polymer network is, and how easily air moves through the cells. Denser, finer cells mean slower rise.
Temperature matters more than people think
Viscoelastic foam softens as it warms. A squishy that takes five seconds to rise in a cold room may take two in a warm one, and feel noticeably firmer straight out of a delivery van in winter.
If a new squishy feels stiff, let it sit at room temperature for an hour before judging it.
How we rate rise
Every FLUFFZI product carries a slow-rise rating from 1 to 5. It's a simple, repeatable measurement: compress fully, release, and time the recovery to roughly 90% of original height at room temperature.
