Slow-rise foam degrades in predictable ways: it dries out, it yellows in UV light, and it tears at creases that get squeezed the same way every time.
Almost all of that is preventable.
Cleaning without wrecking the rise
Surface dirt collects on the painted or coated skin, not inside the foam. Wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry fully before storing.
Never soak a slow-rise squishy. Water trapped inside the cell structure ruins the airflow that produces the rise, and it can breed mildew inside the foam.
Storage rules
Keep squishies out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. UV exposure yellows the coating and makes the surface brittle first, foam second.
- Store loose, not stacked under weight
- Rotate which side rests down every few weeks
- Keep rare pieces in their packaging or a display case
- Squeeze from different angles to avoid a permanent crease line
